Regain XII: Cooking I
Regain XIII: Chiaki drowning
Oops this is a bad one, sorry ponies! Sorry.
In this one Chii is about ten. Not quite, it isn't her birthday yet, but oh well. Her little brother, Chiaki, is three, and the baby brother Chikao is a year old. The older two (and Mama) are playing in the big pool - one of those full size inflatable ones, big and deep. It's an inflatable one for reasons - the first being that summers are hot, but winters are too cold for real pools, and anyway, none of the kids really know how to swim. This is just to celebrate Papa going on vacation.
It's hot, middle of summer, perfect day. Papa just got home, and Mama takes the baby inside to change him after making sure Chii and Chiaki are out of the pool. He whines about it but Mama insists that it will only be until Papa comes out, just a minute. If he wants, he can hide and surprise Papa just like hide and seek. She tells Chii to watch him and goes inside.
Which just means that Chiaki insists Chii can't see where he hides, because she'll tell Papa on him. She has to promise that she won't, that she'll look the other way while he hides and swears to count to twenty before turning around.
She gets to nine before she hears this splash. She decides he's being a jerk and keeps counting. At the twenty mark she turns around and realizes that he's in the pool. He must have tried to hide on a floatie and slipped and he's under the water.
So without thinking, she goes in after him. But because she's not a strong swimmer, and because he was fighting and struggling, he just wound up pulling her down with him. But she's supposed to protect her brother! She's trying! But she can't breathe and he's not moving so much, and she still can't lift him... The last thing she really remembers is things getting dark.
... and obviously she knows that she lived through this, but she just doesn't know about Chiaki. Not yet.
